Makar Sankranti is one of the most prominent solar festivals celebrated across India, marking the transition of the Sun (Surya) into the zodiac sign of Capricorn (Makara). It heralds the end of the harsh winter season and the beginning of warmer, longer days ( Uttarayan—the northward journey of the Sun). Culturally, it is a harvest festival where farmers celebrate the incoming crops, express gratitude to the Sun God for vitality and abundance, and pray for peace and prosperity.
